The Digital Media Practitioners of Nigeria, DMPN, Nigeria’s foremost Digital Media Association has called on Nigerians to come out em-masse to vote in the Presidential and National Assembly elections slated for tomorrow Saturday 23rd February 2019.The Association made up of Nigeria’s top digital media practitioners, took to micro-blogging social networking site Twitter to advocate for voting as Nigeria decides. The body also encouraged Nigerians to vote peacefully and desist from spreading fake news.
Members of the Associations lent their voices to encourage Nigerians using the Hashtags #GoOutAndVote– to encourage voting, #VoteNotFight– to dissuade violence, #NoToFakeNews to discourage the spread of false information, which usually is at its peak during election period.
The call to action was well received by Nigerians who have since joined members of DMPN to reiterate the importance of voting, and peaceful elections. As at press time, the hashtag #GoOutAndVote came in 2nd place on the Nigerian trend table on Twitter.
Speaking on the advocacy campaign, Chairperson of the association Miss Moji Delano said:
We are very happy that Nigerians are taking the elections seriously and understand the importance of exercising their right to vote. We however also want to implore Nigerian’s to vote peacefully and report meddlesome interlopers who attempt to disrupt the elections around their area.
She also called on Nigerians to collectively fight against fake news and shut it down vehemently. She continued:
We also must kick against fake news especially this elections period. We are unfortunately in the era where people share stories and unconfirmed reports without verifying or asking questions. Fake news is dangerous, does more harm than good and we must not allow ourselves to be agents of false information or propaganda. Let us ask questions when we get messages, verify their authenticity and only share if it is true and will not incite any sect of the society.
….. she concluded.
