HURRAY !!! NIGERIA”S PREMIER (ANGLICAN) CATHEDRAL IS 129 YEARS OLD, TODAY (1889-2018)

And Whereas in the year 1861, King William Dappa Pepple I, after conversion and baptism in London, introduced the Christian faith in Bonny upon his return.

And whereas St Stephens Parish Church was founded and dedicated in 1864 by the Rt Revd Samuel Ajayi Crowther (Bishop of the Niger Territories, 1864-1891).

Cathedral of St Stephen Bonny, today

And whereas, on the 27th day of February 1889, on the day of his reception by the generous Bonny Christians who presented their new iron Church as his Cathedral, the Bishop graciously accepted and consecrated St Stephen’s Parish Church, as his Cathedral, as his large Diocese of the Niger Territory had not a Cathedral.

Wherefore, we send our hearty Congratulations to the Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria (The Most Revd Nicholas D. Okoh)

The Archbishop of the Province of Niger Delta (Most Revd Ignatius O C Kattey) and other Bishops within our Province.

The Bishop of Niger Delta Diocese
(The Rt Revd Ralph Cornelius Ebirien) and the Greater Chapter of the Cathedral.

The Dean of the Cathedral of St. Stephen, Bonny.
(The Very Revd Richard Ibituru Hart) and the Cathedral Lesser Chapter.

All faithfuls of the Cathedral, the Diocese of Niger Delta and Bonny Kingdom at large (The cradle of Christianity in the lower Delta).

This is our Heritage: May God bless and keep our Delta Church.
