A pregnant woman was killed by an angry soldier this morning at Jakpa Junction, Effurun, Delta State.
The incident happened at 7.45 am at a military checkpoint on Jakpa Junction, causing an irate mob to destroy the military post and set a military vehicle on fire.
This also led to the death of a soldier man as well as five other civilians, with unnumbered other persons who were injured as the soldier men opened fire on the irate mob. This incident has left serious tension in the area.
This development ensued this morning and eyewitnesses said the soldiers stopped the tricycle (Keke) rider conveying the lady at the checkpoint for allegedly violating the “no movement” order during today’s environmental sanitation which held across the state today.
We gathered that the woman pleaded with the soldiers that she was rushing to prepare for her daughter’s marriage ceremony which is holding today, but the soldiers refused all entreaties.
When all entreaties failed, the Keke man attempted to escape. But this move angered one of the soldiers, who visited his anger on the woman by angrily hitting her stomach with the bayonet of his gun, thereby ripping her stomach open in the process. She slumped immediately and died on the spot.
The people who were around, upon seeing that the woman was dead, attacked the Soldiers. The ever busy Jakpa Junction is currently deserted as security men have taken over the area to avert further crises.
